This guy, from Princeton, understands it better than most.
It is no coincidence that his book - On Bullshit - was a best seller while the companion follow-up, On Truth, was not.

An assistant professor at Williams College and visiting researcher at Yale University admitted in the District's federal court this week that he defrauded banks, the federal government and credit card companies out of $800,000 in the past decade.The big question is whether his entire early career is fabricated. No one seems to know yet.
