  Bigger = Yawn
Wal-Mart Super Store a-comin'.

Basically what this means is that the existing building will go vacant for the forseeable future and at least one of the chain grocery stores will pull up stakes. My guess is that the Adams Big Y and North Adams' Price Chopper are the most vulnerable.

I don't see it being that much different than the status quo.

John Barrett's quote:
"There's just not that many small businesses here for them to destroy."
is sadly true, but that is a whole other discussion.

Comments:
I think that statement depends on what you consider to be a small business. Certainly the grocery stores will be the victim and my guess is Price Chopper due mostly to location than anything else.

But what about the small farmer who sells produce, milk, meat? Which will lead to restaurants that like to offer locally grown. How about the banks that make money off of short term loans to those above?

I'm guessing the list is actually quite long and for Former Mayor Barrett to make statements shows that he is A)Very bitter about his loss or B)Doesn't really understand the local economy and/or C)Doesn't really give a crap about North Adams now that he has been dethroned.

I am no fan of basing the local economy on a "creative economy" model, but I'm even less of a fan of basing a local economy on big box stores - which seems to have Former Mayor Barrett's action plan.
