  Globe Going Bye Bye?
The Boston Phoenix breaks a BIG story. The NYTimes Company, which owns the Boston Globe, has told the Globe's unions that the paper will close in 30 days if the workers don't immediately give $20 million in concessions.

Having witnessed the dramatic collapse of several large daily papers around the country in the past year, it is difficult to say how much of this is a calculated threat versus an absolutely desperate Hail Mary.

Strange days.....

Comments:
I have a feeling something will happen to ensure the Globe continues on, whether the unions and the NYT come to some agreement, or a third party intervenes or someone just comes to their senses in some respect.

The irony to me is that despite the market and technological reasons for newspaper downturns, the NYT hastened the death of the newspaper along with its horrendous behavior during the Bush years, thus devaluing newspapers as a useful commodity, whereas the Globe actually did some GREAT investigative reporting on the Bush administration, being one of the few bright lights of the era (along with The New Yorker).

There's irony for you. Sometimes it's a bitch.
