Does Jerry Springer Run the Eagle?
Does this domestic abuse story merit front page news?
PITTSFIELD — A woman who allegedly intended to artificially inseminate her wife with her brother's semen has been charged with domestic assault and battery.While same-sex marriage is certainly still in its novelty stage, I doubt that a "straight" spousal rape story would have been given the same coverage. Then again, the Eagle's online reader have made it the most viewed story of the day. And the ad hoc Topix thread (which was started by reader because the paper did not create a forum on the story. hmmmm...) is absolute comic gold. ¶ 7:22 AM

I saw the story via the Drudge Report, the first time I've seen the Berkshires there; Drudge generally leads to attention from other blogs and news sources. So the Eagle wasn't wrong to think the story had legs.
Obviously the lesbian angle is part of the "news" appeal; it's a weird story with man-bites-dog interest, even if you're not homophobic. I do think if an infertile or impotent man attacked his wife with a syringe full of semen, that would also be more newsworthy than another drunk trying to rape his wife.
